CV Preparation

CV PreparationWhether it’s your first time writing a CV, updating your current version or starting again after 10 years in employment your CV is an advertisement – of you!  Masses and masses of information will bore the reader whereas lack of information will result in you being passed over very quickly.  Finding the balance is critical.  Here are some ideas you may wish to consider:

  • Keep it concise – 3 pages is ideal, 5 if you must
  • If you have reams of information, detail the past 3 years and have a section which reads: “Previous experience available on request”
  • Tailor the CV to show how your skills meet the criteria of a specific job
  • List your key skills near the top of the first page
  • List a profile letting the reader know a little about you and the way that you write
  • For both education and employment history you should cover dates, names of institutions or employers as well as position held or qualification gained
  • List employment responsibilities in bullets, keep it concise but cover everything you did – think about the typical day at work and don’t assume your reader will know
  • Detail what an employer’s business activities were – not every company is a household name
  • Provide contacts for referees; make sure they are aware that they are your referee.
  • Keep it tidy!  Don’t try to be clever with MS Word!
